Although it may surprise some, KU's definition of "nontraditional" encompasses more than simply age alone. In fact, there are many students between 18-22 (of "traditional age") who are considered nontraditional, including first semester freshman who live with their parents (or not!) and commute from out-of-town, students who are married, military veterans, and students who are parents themselves. Being nontraditional does not convey any special status or privileges, nor is it meant as a label. The term allows us to target information to students who, for various reasons, have circumstances that make it more difficult to access information on campus. For nontraditional students, life can often be quite complex, particularly student life, whether that is due to distance, multiple life roles, reduced time on campus, or simply the juggling act that goes along with being self-supporting. Nontraditional students are an important part of the diversity that makes KU a rich and interesting place. Any student can sign up to receive nontraditional information. At the Student Involvement and Leadership Center, we help ALL students explore their options, with special attention to nontraditional needs. While we can only give you a snapshot here, more information and assistance is available in our office. As student services evolve on the KU campus, we look forward to your input and to opportunities to get acquainted. Come introduce yourself! |
